Each year County Line Church selects an international ministry partner to receive funds through the Joy to the World Offering. This year’s recipient is Global Disciples. In short, Global Disciples partners with pastors in the areas of discipleship training, leadership development, and small business development. You can learn more about this ministry on their website at globaldisciples.org.
Below is an excerpt taken from the “What’s In Your Hand?” book, published by Global Disciples. In the coming weeks we will share the stories of people who have experienced the “What’s In Your Hand?” training and running a business to support their families and churches.
Sweep and Pray
“In my context, you cannot be a Christian in business without prayer,” shared Amaziah, a small business trainer. “Competitors often use witchcraft to draw customers or curse you in an effort to defeat you.”
They purchase tobacco from the witchdoctor, for example, who has “special medicine” designed to attract customers. As they smoke their pipes, they call customers from all directions. Some even send a truck out at night to drive around the city, praying to evil spirits and claiming the city for their business.
To spiritually combat these practices, Amaziah would arrive to work early and clean the courtyard of the shops in his area. As he swept, he prayed God would bring customers to his shop and use him in their lives.
In this area, shop owners actively greet and call people to enter their shops. As people entered the courtyard, they would pass a large shop owned by a woman who used witchcraft in hopes of attracting customers. Yet, people frequently bypassed her shop and went to his smaller shop, even standing and waiting while he was busy serving other customers.
One day, the woman asked Amaziah who his witchdoctor was, commenting that his witchdoctor’s power was greater than hers. Amaziah explained it was God’s power that protected and helped his business. The next day, Amaziah went to the woman’s business and prayed God would show her His power and bless her business that day. God answered his prayer. But though she saw the power of God through this prayer, she did not acknowledge God, and soon her business returned to its normal sales.
Amaziah plays Christian music in his shop. One day, the owner of a bigger shop stopped to jeer at him. Back in his shop, the man cursed Amaziah’s business and began telling people that in three days, Amaziah would go out of business. When he heard about this, Amaziah said, “I will return the three days to him.” It was a Friday night so he closed his business and went to the church to pray. He prayed most of the night, asking God to defend his business.
On Sunday, Amaziah attended church and later opened his shop. People excitedly came in, asking if he’d heard what had happened. Late Saturday night, a mob looted area shops. When the army was called in to restore order, they saw that the competitor’s big shop was unharmed. “You must be part of this group that is causing the problem!” they challenged. “Why else would your shop be unharmed. You have three hours to remove your things and be gone!” Though the man protested, there was nothing he could do; in three hours he was packed and gone. God had returned to his own head the very curse he had put on Amaziah.
